August 2014

Through – September 1 – Fish Tales! Kids tell the best tall tales and we are celebrating that creativity and wild imagination with Fish Tales. Click here for all the details on how your kids can write and/or draw a picture for discounted admission, the chance to win prizes and other fun stuff all summer long!

2 & 3 – Fintastic Fish Tales Fun! Sat. 11:00 to 1:00, Sun. 1:00 to 3:00 Bring your Fish Tale or make one with our education staff while learning about camouflage.  Aquatic animals have sneaky ways of blending into their surroundings.  Discover some of their tricks with crafts and activities – no extra charge with admission.

5 – TWOsdays – Enjoy two-for-one admission prices after 5:00 pm on Tuesdays when we are open till 9:00 (last entry 8:00).*  It’s a great way to save for families and a unique date night with sea-themed adult beverages in the Coral Reef Café.  The special August 5th is Deep Blue Sea. *Free admission applies to lowest price admission and cannot be combined with other offers.

9  – Turtle Tales! – Book Signing and Behind-the-Scenes Tours - We have a very special green sea turtle living behind-the-scenes who has overcome some tough challenges.  Her story is so inspiring author Lynne Wilcox and artist Leigh Kirkland wrote and illustrated Thalassia’s Story.  Wilcox and Kirkland will be available to sign copies of the book from 10:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00.

Behind-the-scenes tours to meet Thalassia will be offered at 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30.  Books and Turtle Tour Gift Certificates will be available for a jump on holiday gift shopping.  Here are the details for the behind-the-scenes tours:

  • Adults – $10, Youth – $8 plus general admission or membership. For safety reasons, tour not recommended for children under 5 years old.
  • Behind-the-scenes tours will be sold at the main admission gate on a first come basis, and limited to 25 people per tour.  No advance reservations can be accepted.
  • The tour includes a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs, so we are unable to accommodate wheelchairs or strollers in the working areas.
  • Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver.
  • Sturdy, closed toe shoes are recommended for both your safety and comfort.

10 – 17 – Shark Week! – Every week is Shark Week at the Oklahoma Aquarium with our bull and nurse sharks in a one-of-a-kind walk-through tunnel, but we also sink our teeth into the Discovery Channel’s annual frenzy.  Talk to our staff biologists who dive with sharks every month, see how they really eat and learn why our sharks have been used in potentially life-saving research.  Here is the full schedule of activities for the week:

  • All Week – Shark Trashformation! Don’t toss those recyclable plastic shopping bags, start saving them up and bring them to help complete a shark-size community art project.  More details on this easy way to Think Blue To Go Green are coming soon.     
  • Sunday 10th – Sharks Need Love Too – 1:00 to 3:00 – It’s easy to be afraid of sharks but when you understand the important role they play in the health of our oceans and entire planet, you can appreciate why they need some TLC!  We’ll share some awesome shark bio-facts and have shark-themed games for kids.  Don’t forget, your kids can share their Fish Tales for discounted admission for Shark Week activities.
  • Monday 11th – Shark Feed Talk – 1:00 (Shark Feed at 1:30) – Feeding frenzy or fine dining? Get an up-close look at exactly what and how our sharks eat. The Shark Feed Talk will be offered in the Cox Shark View Room starting at 1:00 and will feature hands-on activities with our shark feed and dive equipment.  The talk is free with admission and leads into the shark feed at 1:30.                                                                                                                       
  • Monday 11th – Behind-the-Scenes Shark Feed Tour – 1:15 (Shark Feed at 1:30) – There’s no way to get closer to our sharks while they’re feeding than to journey to the top of the tank and stand alongside our staff biologists. Here are the details for Shark Feed Tour participation:

    • Adults – $12, Youth – $10 plus general admission or membership. For safety reasons, tour not recommended for children under 5 years old.
    • Behind-the-scenes tours will be sold at the main admission gate on a first come basis, and limited to 25 people per tour.  No advance reservations can be accepted.

  • Tuesday 12th – Shark Bites – 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30 – Our shark collection is so unique and valuable, researchers came to the Oklahoma Aquarium to test the strength of lines used to anchor data collection devices used by NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  We’ll share video of these incredible shark bite tests and other rare clips of research, collection and transport. Free with admission.                                                            
  • Tuesday 12th – TWOsdays and Shark Week Watch Party – 5:00  - On Tuesdays through the summer, enjoy TWO-for-ONE admission prices* after 5:00 when we are open late, until 9:00 (last entry at 8:00).  Plus, join our staff to watch Shark Week and ask questions of our shark experts.  The Coral Reef Café’ will mix up some special adult-beverages, called, what else?   • Wednesday 13th  – How Do You Measure Up? – 11:00 to 1:00 – If you were a shark what kind would you be?  Measure yourself against all kinds of sharks with floor activities, games and a look at how being completely cartilaginous compares to having bones.  All activities free with admission.

  • Friday 15th  - Tall Tales!  11:00 to 1:00 – Could Megalodon still exist?  Explore the mystery and dig for shark tooth fossils.  For the little ones, enjoy Seaside Story Time and don’t forget to share your Fish Tales for discounted admission and prizes.  Activities included with admission.                                                                     
  • Saturday 16th – Too Weird to be True – 11:00 to 1:00 – Sharks that take bites in perfect circles?  Or that are too small for you to see?  Discover some of the most bizarre sharks with exploration stations and games.  Activities are free with admission.                                                                                   
  • Saturday 16th Behind-the-Scenes Tours – 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30 – Construction on the Sea Turtle Experience is underway, and the two sea turtles who will call the exhibit home are getting excited to meet everyone!  You can get an early introduction to these magnificent creatures by participating on a Behind-the-Scenes Tour.  You’ll not only tour our holding facility and see the turtles, you’ll also get to journey above the Siegfried Families Shark Adventure to see the half-million gallon tank from a marine biologist’s perspective. 

    • Adults – $10, Youth – $8 plus general admission or membership. For safety reasons, tour not recommended for children under 5 years old.

  • Sunday 17th – Shark Smarts – 1:00 to 3:00 - Test your shark knowledge with games, scavenger hunts, crafts and other hands-on activities.  Free with admission.  Plus, a progress report on our Shark Trashformation project.

September 2014

13 – Scout Day  – Activities from 11:00 to 1:00 - The Oklahoma Aquarium hosts Scout Days to honor all youth organizations and their members (such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, 4-H, FFA, etc.). There are special activities offered from 11:00 to 1:00 pm, but the discounted rate is available for the entire day (remember the last ticket is sold 1 hour prior to closing.)

  • $7 per student (age 3 and over) and or; $10 per adult (cost includes full Aquarium admission).
  • To receive discounted prices, youth organization members must be in uniform or carrying organization membership cards.
  • Adults must accompany a youth organization member, maximum of one adult per child admitted at discounted admission. 
  • Junior Marine Biologist badges may be earned by fulfilling requirements outlined at the Aquarium that day and patches may be purchased for $3.

Scout Day Theme: What Bugs You? Get up close and personal with some of the "bugs" found on land and in water!

18 - Aqua-Tots! – 11:00 – Bring your little ones out for a special Seaside StoryTime in our Shark View Room. Join our educators for an interactive experience in front of our half-million gallon shark exhibit!  Visit the Oklahoma Aquarium Coral Reef Café’ for lunch and order a Treasure Box…$5 for a drink, PB&J or hot dog and chips. Aqua-Tots is for ages 1-5. There is a maximum of 35 children, first come, first served.

October 2014

6 – Homeschool Day -11:00 and 1:15 - The Oklahoma Aquarium features quarterly Homeschool Days. These are days when all of the classroom programs are reserved for our homeschool guests with accompanying activities in the Aquarium. Click here for more information about our Homeschool Days. 

  • The 11:00 program for our younger students will provide a glimpse into our deep oceans. Students will discover some of the "Creeps from the Deep". 
  • The 1:15 program for our older students will bring them almost face to face with a hungry bull shark! Students will get a behind the scenes shark feed tour to see how an apex predator eats.

27 – 31 — HallowMarine!   6:30 – 9:00 – For these 5 evenings, the Aquarium is transformed into a spooky (but not too scary!), salty Halloween adventure. Bring your kids in their costumes to trick-or-treat among the tanks, play games, jump around on a huge pirate ship and wave hello to the diving mermaid and pirate in the Coral Reef.  Plus, all the exhibits are open!  $7 for children, $10 for adults. 

November 2014

Dates TBD – Scuba Diving Santa Claus – 3:30 - Even Santa likes to go for a swim in the tropics, and the Coral Reef is as close as you get in Oklahoma to diving in the Caribbean.  Watch Santa find out who’s naughty or nice among the fish in the 65,000 gallon saltwater tank, then get your camera ready to have your child pose for the most unique Santa picture ever, without getting wet!
