Updating or repairing an exhibit at the Aquarium is usually a matter of shutting it down, then reopening the tank when the work is complete. But for something as large as enhancing the Siegfried Families Shark Adventure, closing wasn’t an option. So, if you’re a regular Oklahoma Aquarium visitor, you’ve probably seen the work in progress to transform the dark ramps leading into the shark tunnel and dome into vibrant, interactive paths of information. The addition of colorful artwork, graphics, shark jaws and even a dive cage replica were the first phase of dressing up our biggest tank.
Phase I is now complete and we’re moving on to Phase II. With support from Cox Communications, interactive computer kiosks will be stationed to play video about our sharks and show how we take care of them behind-the-scenes. The shark collection at the Aquarium is growing along with the exhibit features. When the Aquarium opened in 2003, there were 6 sharks in the tank, with a combined weight of about 1,800 pounds. Now, there are 20 sharks, weighing in at more than 3,800 pounds total!
