Programs and tours
Get the most of your educational experience by participating in a tour and educational program! Our tours and programs will spark enthusiasm about marine biology, environmental science, and conservation. Please note that programs and tours are only open to students and school employees/required chaperones. Parents/extra chaperones are welcome to enjoy the exhibits, café, or gift shop while students are in the classroom or on a tour.
Swim Into Science: Behind-the-Scenes Tour (2nd-6th gradeS)
See the aquarium through a scientist's lens by venturing to our wet lab. You'll learn how we care for our animals and their tanks, and how we practice the scientific method to carry out research at the aquarium. Students will even get the chance to see how we conduct coral research by looking through a microscope to observe glowing coral polyps! After your students swim into science, they'll be equipped and eager to formulate their own hypothesis about other animals in the aquarium.
This tour lasts about 20-30 minutes. Each tour can accommodate a maximum of 25 people. Groups with more than 25 attendees will divide into smaller groups and receive separate tours. This program is only open to students and school employees. Parents/extra chaperones are welcome to enjoy the exhibits, café, or gift shop while students are taking their tour.
The Inside Story: Behind-the-Scenes Tour (7th grade and up)
Get VIP access to see where all the marine magic happens! You will visit some of our most popular exhibits and visit the areas behind them to learn about the effort it takes to maintain an "ocean" in Oklahoma. In addition to plenty of fun animal facts, you'll learn about prominent environmental threats and how to participate in global conservation efforts. You'll even have the chance to stand a few feet away from the world's most aggressive shark when we visit the top of our bull shark exhibit.
This tour lasts about 30-40 minutes. Each tour can accommodate 25 people. Groups with more than 25 attendees will divide into smaller groups and receive separate tours. This program is only open to students and school employees. Parents/extra chaperones are welcome to enjoy the exhibits, café, or gift shop while students are taking their tour. This tour visits areas that can only be accessed by stairways and is not recommended for groups with wheelchairs or other accessibility needs that are limited by stairs.
Sea turtle Science (All AGes)
Learn about one of the ocean's most charismatic reptiles as we discuss all of the traits and behaviors that make sea turtles so unique. Students will also learn about the major threats to sea turtle populations, and how anyone and everyone can take part in sea turtle conservation efforts. This interactive class also offers an opportunity to hold and examine shells and other biological artifacts from our sea turtle collection. This program lasts about 25 minutes and may be tailored to students of any age, but is recommended for 3rd-7th grades.
Completely Cartilaginous: All about Sharks (All ages)
Take a bite out of biology by attending this program about sharks and their fellow boneless relatives. Students will learn about the challenges and advantages of having a skeleton made entirely of cartilage, and why that makes sharks so unique. We will also cover the major threats to shark populations and the reality about shark threats to humans. Students will also have the chance to touch the jaws of a bull shark and tiger shark in addition to a variety of other shark artifacts. Your group will leave this class with a whole a new perspective on sharks and hopefully inspire your students to visit our shark and ray touch tank out on the main aquarium floor. You can further augment this program by attending the free, regularly-scheduled shark feeding shows (Mondays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m.). This program lasts about 25 minutes and may be tailored to students of any age, but is recommended for younger elementary school students.
